Student Research
Pre-requisite:
- Statistics is a pre-requisite to Research Methods subject.
- Research Methods is a pre-requisite to Thesis Writing Subject.
Textbook:
- For proper guidance in making a research proposal or research report, each student shall be advised/encouraged to own a personal copy of the USL Thesis/Research Writing Guide.
Course Syllabus:
- Course Syllabus for all subjects must be in consonance with the revised USL Thesis/Research Writing Guide.
Course Requirement:
- For Research Method subject, submission and presentation of a Research Proposal for approval.
- For Thesis Writing subject, the approved research proposal will be pursued and defended as a mini-thesis.
Research/Thesis Writing Fee
- Thesis advising/mentoring should primarily be a form of service to students; hence, NO Thesis Writing Fee is to be collected from any student. During Defenses, students may serve affordable snacks to the Defense Panel. Token of appreciation is not required nor to be insinuated by the professor.
- Nonetheless, in recognition of the service of faculty members involved in student researches, in lieu of an adviser’s/panelist’s fee, faculty involvement in student researches as advisers or panelists will be credited point for outreach activity not exceeding 3 points.
Faculty Research
- Research remains to be a requirement for promotion to the next rank.
- A faculty member who wishes to conduct a research for promotion purposes shall coordinate with the UDC Director who shall discuss possible researches that could be undertaken based on the research priorities of the Institution and based on the expertise of the researcher. Consequently, the faculty member shall be assigned 3-unit or 6 unit research load and shall be contracted for a period of one or two semesters depending on the nature of the research work.
- The research proposal shall be defended to a panel composed of members recommended by the UDC and duly approved by the President.
- Technically, the faculty member shall be a part of the research pool of the university during the semester/s he/she is given research load. Hence, for monitoring purposes, he/she shall report to the UDC Director on a regular basis.
The Letter of Research Assignment
- As early as the end of the second semester, the Academic Dean identifies the faculty members who are due for promotion, or those who will have to conduct research (contracted or non-contracted) for the next school year.
- To notify instructors concerned, the information may be included in the “remarks portion” of the teacher’s efficiency rating form. (e.g. To conduct contracted/non-contracted research next school year.)
- Tenured faculty members are no longer required to conduct research by assigning them 3-unit research load.
