The heart of the whole Louisian community was set ablaze as the University of Saint Louis-High School Department was crowned champion in Tuguegarao City’s Pavvurulun Afi Festival 2015 Tugsayaw competition held last Aug. 8, 2015.

Out of nine high schools, USL wowed the crowd with their intense dance moves, unique choreography, and awesome costume and props, thus earning a standing ovation from the high-profile judges.

More than 50 USL-HS students endured the scorching sun as they performed on the City’s main street, the “Calle Commercio.” Aside from the championship and P50, 000 as their grand prize, the USL-HS team also earned the “Best in Costume” award.

The team was choreographed by Mr. Allan Samonte and coached by Mr. Aurelio Almazan, Ms. Mary Ann Maximo, and Mr. Vincent Taguba.

The Tugsayaw competition was to kick off the weeklong festival which aims to promote the culture of togetherness and to establish the fire-themed festival nationwide.  “Pavvurulun” and “afi” are Ybanag terms for togetherness and fire, respectively.
