TIMSS 2003 in Region 2
The Unlad-Dunong Center (UDC) administered the released items from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2003 in four provinces of the region in March 2012. The Philippines ranked 41st out of 45 participating countries in the Grade 8 math of the TIMMS 2003. An international study assessing student performance in math and science, the TIMSS provides data to participating countries for the improvement of math and science teaching and learning. The TIMSS 2003 released items were administered by the UDC to both math teachers and randomly sampled second year high school students from USL and Cagayan National High School (Cagayan); Saint Ferdinand College and Tumauini General High School (Isabela); Quirino General High School and Cagayan Valley Colleges of Quirino (Quirino); and Saint Mary’s University and Nueva Vizcaya General High School (Nueva Vizcaya). A private and a public high school represented each province. The participating schools were not represented during the TIMSS in 2003. The conduct of the test in the region was to answer the objectives of the two research grants commissioned by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) to Dr. Pyrene T. Quilang and Mrs. Marie Jean Mendezabal. Dr. Quilang, the UDC Director, studies on the Mathematical Competencies of Secondary Teachers in Region 2. On the other hand, Mrs. Marie Jean Mendezabal, a member of the University research pool, is working on Diagnosing Students’ Mathematical Difficulties: A Basis for Remediation Program. Results of the studies will be given to the commissioning agency for the dissemination to public and private schools in the region and for the improvement of the K-12 curriculum. |
